Dear Families of CES Students,

What a great start to the school year it has been! Our teachers have been working hard to develop a school climate based on our core expectations: respect, kindness, and growth.

While academic growth is a primary focus, we can't meet our goals if we don't teach the whole child. We are placing a strong emphasis on social/ emotional learning. We have a "Kindness Matters" box in the front office. A student can write a short story about another student's act of kindness and put it in the box. Then, each week, Mrs. Clark and I read some stories from the box on the announcements. Through this, students will hear examples of how kindness looks and sounds. For the past week and a half, students have been "in training" at lunch. They are doing very well and meeting our expectations of exhibiting good manners and conversing with their friends in healthy ways during this enjoyable time of the day. In classrooms throughout the campus, teachers are supporting students in practicing cooperation through collaborative learning. They are also helping students self-regulate so that they have tools to be calm and happy people throughout their lives.

I am already seeing evidence of real world application of skills in classrooms. This is of great importance since these experiences will make learning relevant and meaningful for children. Follow me on Twitter @principal_ces for a look into classrooms. I will be posting pictures and videos.

It is a joy to lead Connally Elementary School and teach your precious children.
